Life Before Crohns

I had the world at my feet. I was placed in a well reputed IT company at the age of 20. I was a passionate and a dedicated worker who never hesitated to extend my working hours or to work round the clock to accomplish my tasks. Eventhough we were settled in Chennai, as my home was very far from Tidel park (the place I worked), I stayed in a hostel. As I was working in an aggressive project ,  I would be the first person to leave for work from my hostel and the last one to return. My working hours were so erratic that I had no time to have food properly or to think of anything else other than work. On top of all these, I also enrolled for my MCA thru distance education to be on par with all my engineering peers. I was working during most of the weekends so that I could utilize my comp-offs during exams. I was biting more than I could chew and was running the rat race, day in and day out. As my project was a huge success, I received many accolades and also an opportunity to travel onsite (Colorado, USA) for a long term assignment. I was so happy and proud that all my hardwork has finally paid off without having the slightest inclination that in order to fulfill my dreams, my ambitions, my commitments and my responsibilities, I have been neglecting my health all the while and it would backfire one day.

My surgeries

Even though I was under medications (Pentasa and Azoran)  after my crohn's diagnosis in Feb 2012, my condition worsened over the months and had to be under the knife for the first time in my life in June 2012 for an ileostomy. My ascending and transverse colon were removed. Currently, I just have a part of my descending colon and sigmoid colon. Ileostomy reversal was done in Sep 2012. Reversal was an expected one but what was least expected was the surgery I had to undergo in November 2012 to release adhesions. Three open abdominal surgeries in a span of 5 months was really daunting, both physically and mentally. But as the saying  When you have hit the rock bottom and survived There are very few things in life that can scare you Eventhough the disease was on and off all these years, through trial and error I have  found ways to live with the disease.  Crohns will definitely bring the strongest version out of us.

Curtain raiser

On the personal front, I got married in the year 2008 and we were blessed with a beautiful princess in 2009 by normal delivery. A top notch career, an understanding husband and with the arrival of my princess, what more I could wish for in life? But God had other plans. Two to three weeks post delivery, I developed mouth ulcers, eye inflammation followed by diarrhea and fever. I had nausea and bloating as well. Visited a general physician, but to no avail. As my condition worsened, I got admitted in a multispeciality hospital. Seeing my lean frame, doctors suspected of tuberculosis and took all possible tests, but all results came negative. I was on IV fluids with antibiotics and antidiarrheal. My mother and sister took care of my baby while my husband was with me in the hospital, 24/7. I was feeling guilty for not able to take care of my one month old baby. I was discharged after a week of hospital stay. The doctors prescribed some vitamin tablets as I was quite frail. Back to Square One..

The homeopathy doctor in Salem reviewed all my reports and gave us the confidence that this disease can be easily controlled by his homeopathy medicines. The medicines were easy to swallow and I also felt some improvement in my condition. I was strongly relying on this homeo treatment as I had to rejoin work after my extended leave of 3 months. But unfortunately after 2 months, my abdominal pain resurfaced and my bathroom visits also increased.  We again drove to Salem and the doctor gave some additional medicines.
